Jagan Mohan Reddy Expresses Regret Over Election Commission Law, Backs CJP
YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expresses regret over the Election Commission's appointment process and backs CJP amid protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the judicial custody of two party leaders.
Opposition parties have been protesting against the arrests, and Jagan Mohan Reddy's support for CJP has drawn attention. His remarks have also raised questions about whether coordination with Left parties could be behind his position. However, no official statement has been made on this possibility so far.
Jagan Mohan Reddy, whose party has supported the NDA government in Parliament on various issues, has voiced concern over the process used to select election commissioners. He has called for changes to the law governing their appointment and proposed including the Chief Justice of India in the selection committee.
According to media reports, Reddy said, “We feel regret now. We have realised that we should not have agreed with the process under which the Election Commissioner is selected by a three-member committee. That committee consists of the Prime Minister, a leader nominated by the Prime Minister, and the Leader of the Opposition.”
He also demanded changes to the law and called for the Chief Justice of India to be included in the committee responsible for selecting election commissioners.
A YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader, speaking to The Indian Express, said the party supports the NDA on an issue-by-issue basis and believes the government needs to provide greater assurances on this matter.
“We support the NDA on the basis of issues. On this issue, we feel that the public needs greater assurances from the government,” the YSRCP leader said.
Explaining the party's position, the leader said that, as an opposition party in Andhra Pradesh, the YSRCP believes it should stand with those seeking to protect the interests of people whose votes were allegedly deleted illegally.
The leader also accused the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led Andhra Pradesh government of benefiting from the functioning of the State Election Commission, alleging that the commission operates in collusion with the state government and follows its directions.
Jagan Mohan Reddy's remarks mark a notable development amid the ongoing dispute over the Election Commission and the arrests of CJP leaders. His demand to revise the election commissioner selection process, along with the YSRCP's stated position on alleged illegal voter deletions, has brought renewed attention to the party's approach towards the NDA and electoral administration.
